Google Analytics - track company or department of users

web service September 18, 2017

Hi there,

I wish to track usages with Google Analytics and have usage statistics by the company / department of the Confluence users, e.g. number of visitors per company / department, the most popular visited Confluence page(s) per company / department, etc.

How can we achieve this, if possible? Thank you.

As far as I know, this isn't possible in Google Analytics because Google can't associate each visit with a user profile.

There are add-ons that will track visits by user. Analytics for Confluence is one that's available for both server and cloud.  It doesn't yet provide analytics by user group, but that's something I'm interested in too and have mentioned to the vendor, who's very responsive and open to feedback.

As a workaround, you could potentially export the group membership and the views by user and join them together in a spreadsheet.  But it would be pretty time-consuming to find the most popular pages per department, because you'd have to do this for each page individually.

Hi Susan, thanks your prompt feedback. Has the vendor replied you on your request of analytics by user group?

Thanks your suggestion of workaround as well. As the review of analytics would be an on-going process, it may be too tedious and difficult for the personnel who compiles the data (as you say it would be pretty time-consuming).

You're welcome!  Yes, I heard from @Tim that it's something they're interested in too, but I don't think there's a specific plan yet.  I'll let Tim weigh in here too to avoid speaking for him. :)
