Formatting Issue on confluence page

Hi there, 

I'm trying to transfer documentation from an old site to a new confluence page. Basically just copying over all text. When I do this and I am in the edit mode, everything looks perfect but as soon as I leave edit mode and publish my changes I see additional '???' or '??' or '?' added to the text. It is randomly applied and when looking at the html code I don't see anything distinctly different. 

Could someone please help me understand why '???' is automatically being added in and how to remove it?

or also try and throw the information into a text editor and see if you find any special characters.
