Edit in Office "office connector" not working in Confluence 5.5

Michelle Bachmann January 29, 2015

Various users are running IE8, IE9 or IE10.  All are windows 7, with office 2010.  We have various instances within the company.  The Confluence instance running v5.3 is working with the ability to Edit in Office.

When clicking "Edit in Office," the office application opens, but the file does not open.  The Confluence instance with v5.5 is returning the following error.

"Accessing to the web server is disabled by default because it is controlled by basic authentication and does not use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).  Do you want to want to search the Microsoft Online Support Center to view possible solutions?"

Both instances are running non-SSL.  The variation I've found is the versions.  Confluence v5.3 is running Office Connector plug in v3.1.2.  Confluence v5.5. is running Office Connector plug in v3.3.3.

What can be done to fix the Office Connector issue with the newer versions of Confluence and Connector?

We see the same problem with some users. Not all. Our confluence is not using ssl/https.

What I don't understand is why this happens for some users and not others?

Is it a browser version issue or is it an office issue?

We ended up installing IE11 and then MS Fixit 50711 to fix the problem.
