Create users for specific spaces

Please can someone help us setting up Confluence with new users.

We want to have multiple spaces but only allow users access certain spaces.

For example, John can access Space A but not Space B. And Julie can access Space B but not Space A.

Can you please confirm how this is done?

Ideally we want to invite a user and set the permissions before they have logged in. Same example as above, can I invite John to Confluence but only to view Space A?

Yes, what you are describing is very doable. Use a group like confluence-users to allow Global permissions and then use space access groups to allow access to each space. It is worthwhile to review these docs:
