Continuation of numbered lists

How can I fix this numbering issue.

After you have both items as below, you can put the cursor at the end of the first item and hit shift-Enter. I did that with the second and added new text in between while retaining the same numbers. You can add text or images age you please. This will work for bullets as well as numbered items.

before

1. Navigate to AAP
2. In the Search 

after

1. Navigate to AAP
   
   some new text that did not affect the number scheme
2. In the Search

Just to confirm Sandy's answer, soft returns are the only way I know of to handle this. I tried hard-coding the starting number in the page source, but that information is stripped when the page is saved. You might be able to reset the numbering with a user macro.
