There are many macros that work only after publishing the page. That is by design since some data need to load e.g Include Page macro and I think that this cannot be changed.

Overall Confluence editor is WYSIWYG and most of the content in Edit mode looks same after publishing. There are some differences between Server and Cloud editors. Cloud version have a new editor experience that you can check and verify which is better.
