Is there a possibility to allow users to:

  • Easily create groups
  • Let other users join groups as they choose
  • All members get notifications of what happens there
  • Have a wall where they share posts, files, etc.

If no options exist yet, what are your plans for the future? Is this something that we can expect?

Thanks!

Short answer: No.

  • Groups are defined by administrators.
  • Use spaces. You can delegate the spaces permissions so more people can add users to a space.
  • For notifications, use the Share button. Use it to push news to your company when they are compulsory to read. Users get an email.
  • Status Updates are for individual profiles only.
  • As a result, the dashboard is the place-to-be, instead of the email box. That doesn't answer much your question, I know.

Those do not replace "Circles" or user-determined "Facebook groups". Concerning plugins, I've seen Group Signup which looks old and not updated.

If we can get comments from any plugin developer who makes groups, that would be awesome.

Thanks for your comment Adrien. I'm very sad for the answer though :S

The alternative you mention is a bit different, we've been that already but it's too "forced" and not really what some users expect.

  • Having the admin bottleneck for managing groups will not work. It needs to be possible for the users to follow/unfollow when they want to.
  • Status updates are nice, but they are not good when you cannot comment or continue discussion
  • Pushing things with the share button is not nice either. It's e-mails all over a gain.

Hi Jorge,

Although this this post is rather old, I'd love to recommend a great social network add-on / app.

Microblogging for Confluence allows for a seamless and direct exchange of information with your team directly in the collaboration system. Just like Twitter and Facebook, a microblog in your own Confluence enables short, spontaneous communication and quick distribution of information without switching context and media - directly in Confluence with all it's comfortable features.

  • Easily create groups
  • Let other users join groups as they choose
  • All members get notifications of what happens there

You can try it here:

Yours sincerely,

Nicki
