Confluence fails to start upgrading from 5.0 to 5.4.4

I am trying to upgrade Confluence. 5.0 to 5.4.4. The versions are in two separate directories, but I have the config (confluence.home) pointing to the same data/ folder (so attachments, etc are kept). When I try to start the new version, data/logs/atlassian-confluence.log spits out a few lines and then hits "[com.atlassian.confluence.lifecycle] <init> Loading EhCache cache manager" and nothing happens after that. I've looked in other places (catalina.out, catalina.<date>.log) and there are no error; output to the logs just stops, and I can't access the application (it never starts listening on its AJP port as defined in conf/server.xml).

This is what I see in data/logs/atlassian-confluence.log, and then nothing after it.

Sigh...came back to the logs later. Turns out I had the DB host wrong.
