Can I search files by typing the words within them ?

Confluence indexes the contents of certain types of attachments (PDF,DOC,XLS, and PPT). As far as searching for types are you referring to serching based on labels that have been applied to a document? If so then you can do a search like below.

labelText:bills

labelText:contracts

labelText:invoices

labelText:reports.
