It's not the same without you

Forgive me but I am new to all this so I am on a steep learning curve!
When you create a meeting notes page, there is a section for attendees. The page created always defaults the creating user as an attendee, I want to do the same thing on a bespoke template, when the user creates the page I want to @mention them on the page.
I have copied the coding from the meeting notes template $documentOwner but this creates a variable that I then have to fill in. I want it to find the user creating the page and automatically add the name.
How can I do this?
