I just upgrade from confluence-5.1 to confluence-5.2.3

You might have a bit more luck if you dro pthat question directly to the refined wiki people.

What version of refined wiki are you using?

helped me:

Server Error 500:

sh /opt/atlassian/confluence/bin/stop-confluence.sh

backup and delete with winscp /var/atlassian/application-data/confluence/index/edge

create index folder, permissions for confluence-user

restart server
