Do guest users count towards marketplace app usage like paid users or do they get free access to app functionality as well?

Great question @James Dellow

And as a followup, can guests even use apps?

If the Guest Users will not have access to user information, will they still be able to use an @ function to Mention a user? and can they be Mentioned themselves?

Major thumbs up for this! It was always one of the "cons" of Confluence.

When you say "...up to 5 guests for no additional cost." What's the cost structure after the initial 5?

Alex Ynema September 12, 2022

Am I correct in ready that a Guest user will only be able to have access to a single defined space? We have multiple spaces where users would only need read access and this sounds like it'll help with not requiring a license for those users but we can't use anonymous access as we have to restrict access to approved domains/Authenticated users.

Thank you all, it is great to see the engagement and interest in this feature! Responding to most of the questions below, I will respond to the rest in the coming days:

@Oliver Seitz Can I have a user as a guest in Confluence and a regular (paid) user in Jira? We currently only have guest role developed for Confluence. In the future, yes, the same user may have guest access in Confluence and regular user role in Jira.
@Jean-Baptiste d'Anchald Will guests have access to Roadmap ?   Guests will be able to collaborate within Confluence like a regular user, so yes, they can create and edit Roadmap Planner macro on a Confluence page.
@Rosa M Fossi Will the release also be available for all, or just for Premium and Enterprise? Guests will be available on Standard, Premium, and Enterprise! We have no plans to remove the feature from Standard.
@Brian Haskins Is there a way to disable this when it rolls out? or is it telling the org admins not to invite people? While you can’t disable the functionality, only org admins can add a guest. Your org admins can choose not to add any guests to the site.
Kelli Frattini-Adams This is exciting! But I am curious.. How do Guest users work with content filtered from Jira? We have had to grant licenses to both jira and confluence to ensure people can view release notes in Confluence that are created by jira filters. This has been a limitation and use of a license just for read-only access. Confluence Guests can’t see content from Jira any more than normal users without Jira access would.
Bryan Tiang Is it possible to add Guests only to a specific Page?

For the beta, guests can’t be added to a single page. You could add the guest to the space and then manually change the permissions on the pages you don’t want your guest to see.

@Abhay Gupta is this feature also available for Jira Software?

Right now, guests role is available for Confluence only.

@Daniel Le Lant Could there be some considerations for time-based access, where access is automatically revoked and their identity is removed from the site/organization.

Thank you for the suggestion! We are considering this as a future development but it will not be available for the beta. We will continue to iterate on and improve this feature!

@Lars Stuber will this be possible for space owners or will there be an API to automate this tasks?

Only org admins will be able to add a guest, but once that guest is added to the site, the space admin can add or remove guests at the space level.

@Bassam Gemayel Great feature! Will it always be available for free?

You can have 5 free guests for each paid user on your site. (10 paid users = 50 free guests). If you exceed your guest limits, you would just need to add them as a paid user. We do not currently have plans to change this pricing.

As mentioned above, I will get to the remaining questions soon. Very exciting to see the interest and engagement in the feature.

Hi @Nidhi Raj - one follow-up:

Can you confirm that adding a guest user will be recorded within one of the audit logs, and which one?

I understand you do not want to allow admins to disable this, however without some kind of compliance backstop we cannot accept this level of risk.

Yes good feature but really behind given how other collab tools can share down to an individual asset e.g. a page (GDocs).  Unless there are more granular pages we will end up with 2 spaces, one public to collab with a customer, and the other for all internal items with the same customer.  We only need to share a few pages.

This would be the same for Jira - we want to have collaborative issues, and internal issues.

Jens Damm September 14, 2022

Can guests login with one of the available federation providers (e.g. Microsoft)? Is there a possibility to migrate existing accounts to be guests?

thomas.ohrbom September 19, 2022

Do we have to add guests on an individual basis, or can they be added through for instance AD groups?

Yar September 19, 2022

Hey there - do guests require to have Confluence product access? Will we have to give up a seat in order to give access to a guest?

Christopher Kraft September 20, 2022

What about the IP Allowlisting? Do guest users have access to individual Spaces despite IP allowlisting?

Hi All,

Thank you again for the continued engagement and interest in this feature. Super excited to have you start using it soon and give us your feedback! As before, please continue to ask questions and I'll be sure to get to them next time if I haven't already. Before you post, be sure to check our responses to previously asked questions.

@Eric Auensen How will this work for companies that have integrated Confluence with an Identity Provider (Okta, OneLogin, etc.)? Will Guests be able to access Confluence Spaces if they do not have IdP account?

The same process will exist for Guest role as they do for normal user roles when it comes to IdPs. The IdP will sync a group of users into admin.atlassian.com. The Org admin will go into the group and apply the Confluence Guest role to that group. Any future user sync into that group will grant them the new users a Confluence Guest role.Customers with an IdP can currently grant product access manually to any users inside or outside their IdP (e.g. via a manual invite). The same is true for the Confluence Guest role.

@Paul SANTUS If we have SSO for JSM clients, will Confluence benefit from this?

@praveen could you please comment how this feature works for the users connecting through SSO as well?

@Haddon Fisher  +1 to the questions around SSO. This functionality loses a lot of we have to manually set up and maintain a distinct authentication policy for this.

SSO can be applied to any Atlassian Account that has been domain claimed. We only allow users with an Atlassian Account to get access to Confluence via the Guest role. So if they have users on SSO today in JSM, then those same users can get access to Confluence via the Guest role, and also have SSO applied to them. However, just having SSO on JSM clients does not automatically apply to Confluence.

@James Dellow Do guest users count towards marketplace app usage like paid users or do they get free access to app functionality as well?

@Matt Reiner _K15t_ And as a followup, can guests even use apps?

Guests can use marketplace apps for free, however, we are providing app developers with the ability to opt out of providing guests access to their app.

Yes, guests can use apps and macros of apps on pages. They can also request the installation of new apps. They cannot install new apps by themselves.

@Tracy B If the Guest Users will not have access to user information, will they still be able to use an @ function to Mention a user? and can they be Mentioned themselves?  No, since user information is restricted, guests cannot @ mention any other user or guest. However, if there is an @ mention on the page that the guest has access to, they can copy-paste that @ mention. This will notify the user that is tagged.
Guests can be @ mentioned by regular users.
@Ian Taylor When you say "...up to 5 guests for no additional cost." What's the cost structure after the initial 5? You can have 5 free guests for each paid user on your site. Eg. if you have 10 paid users you could have 50 free guests. If you exceed your guest limits, you would billed for the remaining as regular paid users.
@Alex Ynema Am I correct in ready that a Guest user will only be able to have access to a single defined space?

Yes, each guest will only have access to the single space that the admin has assigned to them along with any spaces that may be ‘public’ internally via other means. For eg. anonymous access has a site and space control. If anonymous access is off at site level but on for some spaces at the space level, since guests have access to the org via the guest feature, they would have access to the spaces that are open to anonymous access. Similarly, spaces that are open to unlicensed users will also be open to guests.

@Haddon Fisher Can you confirm that adding a guest user will be recorded within one of the audit logs, and which one?

Yes, in the audit log within Atlassian Admin you will see when guests are added and removed from the site, who added them, and the time they were added.

The Confluence product audit log within the Confluence settings > Administration section will also show when a new user has been added into the default guest group and which space they were granted access to.

@Yar do guests require to have Confluence product access? Will we have to give up a seat in order to give access to a guest? Yes, guests need Confluence product access - an org or site admin can invite a guest in and give them 'guest' role via Atlassian Administration. Guests will not count towards a paid license seat.
@Christopher Kraft What about the IP allowlisting? Do guest users have access to individual Spaces despite IP allowlisting?

Guests don't circumvent IP allowlisting so they have to originate from an allowed IP

I hope our responses to your questions have been useful for you to understand more about this feature! Please continue to post any questions you have and I will be sure to get to them the next time!

Thank you,

Hi @Nidhi Raj This is great news! Will there be an API for this? We're looking forward muchissimo for public pages/guests and want to integrate it with our Confluence App Meetical! 🚀

Use case:

  • When a user creates a meeting page from his calendar, and there are external guests, allow the user to invite them with a single click to that page as guests, so that they can see the agenda, comment on meeting notes, and make contributions.

Any idea when an API for this could be available? Thank you!

I am glad that Guests will be free again. I'm not sure I understand why guests cannot be put in Groups as long as the Group only has access to one Space.  But the other limitations do not bother me.

I like it.

Jan-Hendrik Spieth October 5, 2022

| Each individual guest can have access to one space at a time

Just to be clear: do personal spaces count towards that, or can guests have a personal space + access to a "regular" space?
