A new create flow and templates experience is coming to Confluence Cloud!

Hi there, community!

Dilani here from the Confluence Cloud Product Team. I’m here to share some exciting changes to our create flow and template experience in Confluence Cloud.

Redesigning the create flow

After researching how our users typically create new pages in Confluence, we’ve redesigned the page creation flow to make it faster to build from scratch or find a template to help you get started. We will be removing the existing create modal and defaulting you to a blank page with template selection moved directly into edit mode. With this change, you will be able to browse templates by your role or use case. In the final stage of rollout, we will release a rich preview of the template so you can view it before selecting.

Today: create modal

Coming soon: new side panel

Final: add rich preview

How to access templates & select a space

After you land on a blank page, you will see the panel on the right hand side where you can select a template by clicking on it. Once rich previews are launched, you’ll be able to hover over the template and preview it prior to selecting. If you do not want to use a template, just click anywhere on the blank page and start drafting.

You can also find the space selector above templates in the panel if you need to create your page in a different location.

A new template gallery with 40+ new templates

Alongside the new in-app experience, we’re releasing 40+ new templates for roles such as HR, design, IT, Sales, and more. These templates will live in-app and in a new template gallery on Atlassian.com. Use the template gallery to learn how Atlassians, fellow customers, and our partners use Confluence.

When will I get this?

We will be rolling the new create flow to a subset of customers over the next few weeks. The rest of customers can expect the rollout over the next few months. Your admin will get an email notification a few weeks before rollout to help prepare for this change. If for some reason you would like to defer this change to your site, please contact support.

You will start to see the new templates with-in the existing create modal over the next few weeks.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions or feedback below!

now just fix the tables so we can size them.  even the templates are broke vs the original layout intended.

Thank you so much. My computer is dying each time the modal popup opens.

Will we be able to use existing templates and create custom templates?

@Bruce Michelsen Confluence Cloud Engineer here
Yes, you'll still be able to use existing templates and create custom templates.

That's exciting! Nice changes

We really need to be able to choose a default blank template then. The new editor is 100% unfit for purpose for our business.

We can ONLY use the old editor so this just adds another step for every single user (not to mention the additional admin work having to delete and recreate pages when a user creates something with the new editor by mistake).

I was so happy to see that the old editor was going to remain available and that Atlassian was listening so seeing that this is coming is a massive disappointment.

@Ben Shuker just to clarify, this new creation flow and templates experience will only be rolled out to instances that have adopted the new editor.

@nn fixed-width, wide and full width are already available in the new editor. Setting custom widths is being tracked as an issue here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-67748

@Dilani Kahawala I don't understand this clarification. What does "adopted the new editor" mean? To my knowledge, the new editor is available for all, or nearly all, Confluence Cloud users. But so is the old editor, correct? So how do you define "adopted"?

Thinking it through...are you saying that the templates on the new side panel are only available after you've created a blank page that uses the new editor? Because, if that's the case, this new "flow and template experience" does nothing for my company and will go unused until the new editor is drastically improved.

@Dan Winkler thanks for the feedback. Yes, content has to be created in the new editor in order for users to see the new side panel.

And thanks for your reply, @Dilani Kahawala , appreciate it.

I think the fact that the new side templates are only available if you create your page using the new editor is probably worth an explicit mention somewhere in the article.

This seems like a really logical change.  Looking forward to it.

On another note....Please bring back the panel macro

Jennifer McVicker April 6, 2020

Any chance you'll be adding a macro or template for Portfolio (cloud)? We'd REALLY like that.

Andrey_Tcherepanov April 12, 2020

Will we finally have "Additional labels" field on "Create from template" macro?

I get that this method involves less clicks, but I'm not sure how this is more intuitive than the old process, especially when the "template" button is right there next to "create".
