Why doesn't Bitbucket let me use my username to log into the site but does when using git?

Dave H June 27, 2017

My Bitbucket git repo URL is my_username@bitbucket.org/my_company/my_repo (and my password is saved to my OS' credentials store) which work fine, but I'm unable to use my_username to log into the bitbucket.org site to manage my repo there, it requires my email address, which I'm not sure I should be using in my local git repo credentials.

What's going on? Why can't we use our username to log into the site anymore? Will we be expected to use our email address in our git repo URL eventually?

Hi Dave, that changed some time ago and now everybody is required to use their email address instead of their username to log in. That's because of the integration with Atlassian account.

Regarding your second question, we're going to keep using the username in the repo URL, afaik.

Let us know if you have any questions!

Best regards,

Ana
