Upgrading bitbucket for linux from 4.12 to 6.9, does anyone have any tips?  When do you upgrade Git?  we are currently at 1.9.4, what version do you recommend?

While that's a big jump, if you've not a lot of custom add-ons it's probably not too daunting. My main tip would be to try it in a test environment first and check the supported platforms changes carefully.

As for upgrading git, you'll probably need to do it at the same time (as opposed to before or after Bitbucket upgrade) as there's no version of git that's supported in both versions of Bitbucket (Bitbucket 4.12 supports up to Git 2.10 and Bitbucket 6.9 supports Git 2.11 and above). You could upgrade to an intermediate version of Bitbucket but that's likely more complex than upgrading Git alongside Bitbucket. If you do that I'd go for the latest that your operating system provides if in range and supported, or 2.24.

Note that version 6.10 was just released and it's the first "Enterprise release" for Bitbucket providing bugfixes for a longer period (2 years). If the time between upgrades is anything to go by it's probably worth considering.
