STASH - can sync user list from AD but not authenticate

I have my AD synced with Stash, and it has pulled in all the users and groups.  However, when I do a test of a user name and password (or try to logon with it) it says invalid username or password.

I've found similar issues posted but the suggested fix to change advanced setting LDAP search parm did not work for me :

I've also tried to enable logging to show the LDAP query being used as per instructions via via UI and by creating the properties file :https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/STASH/Stash+debug+logging#Stashdebuglogging-EnablingdebugloggingviatheUI

This doesn't seem to have enabled any additional logging regarding the authentication.  I checked through all the .log files and see nothing when login or test fails.

Any other suggestions for how to debug this issue?
