Limitations when using Windows as platform ?

Gilbert Rebhan September 7, 2017

Hello,

we're planning to install Bitbucket on Windows Server 2012.
The documentation says :

Microsoft Windows = up to 500 users, not more than 500 users

Does that mean 500 concurrent users or 500 users at all. Do i need another instance when i have more than 500 users ?

Are there any other limitations when running on Windows that are not documentated but known from practical experience ?

Regards, Gilbert

Hi Gilbert,

The limit here refers to the license (i.e. the maximum number of concurrent users). If you have a license for more than 500 users you'll need to use Linux as the operating system.

Hi Christian,

thanks for quick response. What are the concrete reasons to not support more than 500 concurrent users on Windows ? Is this an limitation caused by OS shortcomings ?

Hi Gilbert,

My understanding is that this is essentially down to performance differences that we've observed between Windows and Linux environments.
