Integrate Bitbucket Pipeline with Source repository

Hi, I am trying to use commands like git diff in my CICD scripts and having trouble understanding how to make a diff work.

First of, I have tried the branches/compare URL as suggested in StackOverflow forums, but that doesn't work, much like it has not worked for many people.

But more importantly, I don't understand the relationship between bitbucket CICD container and the source repo. I would expect the pipeline to be aware of my repository and all the branches/commits to be available, but that is not the case.

Is there a way to make this information available to the build container so that I may use git CLI commands as part of the pipeline script?
