What is the correct way to abandon a branch that led down an unsuccessful path?
Alternatively, just leave it dangling there. It does very little harm. Except that it's annoying when it shows up on your branches lisst.
If you tag the last commit on the branch and then delete the branch, you can still retrieve the commit if you need to and it doesn't show up on your branches list.
If you don't think you'll use it again, simply delete it (on the server).

I'd probably phrase that a little stronger as "if you're quite certain you'll never use it again" . . .
