Are there any reasons (performance or otherwise) for NOT installing bitbucket server and it's database on the same VM?
It would allow us to use a snapshot based backup that would be consistent for both, and that is appealing.
It's an interesting question and it usually boils down to resource contention (database versus applications) and security (database not accessible from outside a firewall/Internet).
Having consistent backups are absolutely crucial.
Hi Matt,
Welcome to the Atlassian Community.
That is exactly how our Bitbucket Server is setup, it has both the db and Bitbucket on the same VM and we use Veeam and take snapshots of it every 30 minutes I believe. We have about 100 repositories on it and and so far have not seen any performance issues on it (3+ years).

Thank you for the quick answer! If you don't mind, one more question for you. When you take the snapshots, do you stop the bitbucket service first to ensure that you don't have any in flight transactions, or is that not really a concern?
