Bitbucket joins the Enterprise release family

Enterprise releases are now called Long Term Support releases

As of June 29th, 2020, Enterprise releases are now called Long Term Support releases. The security bug fix policy for these releases was also updated - we will continue to backport critical security bug fixes and now when architecturally possible, all other security bug fixes are backported to the release for 24 months. G’day Atlassian Community!

My name is Roger Barnes, and I’m a product manager for Bitbucket Server and Data Center. I have exciting news to share with you: Bitbucket 6.10 is officially certified an Atlassian Enterprise release as of its launch last week. This means that Bitbucket 6.10 will receive long-term support via back-ported security updates and critical bug fixes throughout our standard two-year support window.

An official long-term support option for Bitbucket

We frequently hear requests from our largest enterprise customers for a designated long-term support version of Bitbucket, similar to those provided by our Enterprise releases for Jira Software, Jira Service Desk, and Confluence. These customers often face long testing and approval cycles for version upgrades and would prefer a less frequent upgrade cadence. By designating 6.10 an Enterprise release, we’re providing a preferred option, and extending the same two-year support window for back-ported security updates and critical bug fixes that we offer in all of our Enterprise release versions. This gives you the option to stay on an Enterprise release for longer, with the assurance of fixes for critical bugs and security issues regardless of whether a newer feature release is available.

Should I be on the Enterprise release?

Over the years we’ve determined that the best way to be successful with Bitbucket is to upgrade as frequently as your organization will allow. If this means upgrades occur annually, we recommend that you target this 6.10 Enterprise release version and plan to upgrade between subsequent Enterprise releases. If you are able to upgrade more frequently, we continue to recommend the latest version of Bitbucket.

Glad to hear Bitbucket is adopting the Enterprise release pattern too.

Do you know if there will be a second enterprise release for 7.x in 2020?  We only plan for one upgrade a year and want to ensure we update to the most recent enterprise release for the calendar year.

Hi @CanTech SDE Team

Like with our other products with Enterprise releases, we're aiming to have a Bitbucket Enterprise release roughly every 12 months. That said, we haven't targeted a specific 7. version yet, given that 6.10 was just released.

Hi @CanTech SDE Team , as it happens we've just been discussing the next ER release for Bitbucket. Alex is absolutely correct about our official line (every 12 months) and that we've not chosen a target version as yet.

That said, we're considering an ER earlier in the 7.x series given there's likely to be quite some interest. To that end, it's likely we'll have one in 2020.
