why would I need a remote agent?

Why would I want to use a remote agent instead of using local agents? What is the benefit?

Distributed builds and load are the main reasons.

A lot of us have a "build server", we stick Bamboo on it and run everything locally.  But what if the server becomes overloaded?  Remote agents let you do builds on other machines (without having to install a separate Bamboo for each one).  Similarly, building in different environments can be done - I know of several places that build essentially the same code for Windows, Linux and Mac and need to build/test on different OS's and even versions.

  • Specialized runtime environments for your tests
  • Compiling on different platforms
  • Isolating the server from your own build and runtime environment, so makeing sure nothing your developers do will destroy the server
