How can i debug the creation of ec2-userdata

Adam Purdie April 26, 2015

It appears that since 5.8.1 our bamboo instance is creating garbled text when it spins up an elastic-build agent, this doesn't appear to be damaging our builds but facter is reporting an error on many of our builts:

Fact resolution fact='ec2_userdata', resolution='rest' resolved to an invalid value: String "\225XY[trimmed]5\357\377\000" is not valid UTF-8

On looking at the userdata in the ec2 console the data is obviously not a readable UTF-8 string as expected, its all garbled.

How can i debug this?

The content of EC2 user data is compressed. Can you make facter ignore EC2 user data?

I'll give it a go but it would be nice to be able to read this data.

I cannot find out how to disable the lookup of this field in facter or how to not compress the ec2_userdata in elastic bamboo.
