How can I prevent certain plan branches from being removed automatically

We have a large number of plan branches. I'm want to enable the Automatic branch managements "Deleted branches" option and "Inactive branches" option however there are certain branches that we don't want to ever be deleted (our release branches). How can I protect those specific branches or is there a way to run a deletion across all the branches and only delete those that match a certain criteria?

Select the branch, select "configure branch" in the cog menu, on "Branch details" tab you should see "Clean up plan branch automatically". Uncheck it and save.

Is it possible to do this via the API, so I can configure this e.g. for all branches matching release/...?
