I have been having trouble understanding the type of instance that is being selected. Currently the options do not give the instance type (i.e. m1.large) and hence I have no way of understanding the cost. Recently I got a bill for $100/mo for the instance because it sees like we were using a large instance without the need for it. Please clarify how I can tell what instance to use?
EBS x86_64 (linux) is not clear enough
I guess the names are confusing. We don't use the symbolic names in the UI, we use the categories as listed here: http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/ . For example, m1.large is M1 Old General Purpose Large .
You can get more information about an instance if you hover over the instance type with your mouse. You can choose any type you want in the image configuration page.
You can also rename the image configuration if you want it to include the instance type.

When you visit Administration / Image configurations screen you'll see all EC2 image configurations. You can click "Edit" next to each item and choose the requested instance type. You should also check Spot Instances configuration that will allow you minimise costs further.
