Bamboo - Mac Agent

John Alexander Bye November 25, 2011

We develop for iOS and we would like to setup continous integration for these projects. We have created a maven plugin which builds the projects, but it only runs on Mac OS X. I know that Bamboo OnDemand/Studio (we are still with JIRA Studio) supports EC2, but no Mac OS X images are available. We have a Mac Mini available, but if I haven't misunderstood anything, it isn't possible to add remote agents.

Does the above mean that we will be unable to use Bamboo OnDemand for this purpose?

Bad news.. Unfortunately JIRA Studio and OnDemand Bamboo can only be configured to use EC2 and, as you found, there is no way to get an OS X image running on EC2. (I was curious about why EC2 had that limitation and found *this* as a bit of background on the EC2 / OS X issue).

As a quick and dirty fix I have installed bamboo stand alone on a mac mini before and used other methods (repository poling, etc.) to trigger the build. You don't get the cool integration, but you can bridge gaps here and there. Incidentally we did the same for an open source project (http://fix8.org/ with the JIRA pages being at https://fix8engine.atlassian.net/) which builds on linux - just to get around the self-hosted bamboo agent ondemand limitation.

Atlassian has now created an issue to track the feature request for self-hosted remote agents in Bamboo OnDemand: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/BAM-11870
