Though this document (https://support.atlassian.com/migration/docs/how-groups-and-permissions-are-migrated/) is fairly complete regarding how users and groups are migrated from server to cloud for both Jira and Confluence. However, it does not cover what happens when Nested Groups are in play.
Is there any real documentation on what needs to be done before or after so that migrating users and groups with nesting to cloud that works in the end?

Atlassian Cloud does not offer nested groups, we also have a feature request logged in our system which is rejected as Won't do:
There is no workaround to allow the nested group in Atlassian Cloud products but I can suggest a way that can probably be an option for you.
Wherever in User management on the Server, you have nested groups, you can remove them and instead add the users to one direct group. I know this might not be the best solution, but at least a way to allow the migration of such nested groups.
