Keep Getting Invalid Public Key Errors

This question is in reference to Atlassian Developer Documentation: JIRA REST API Example - OAuth authentication

I am trying to access the JIRA REST API and can't get past the authentication step. While trying to configure a new connection in Application Links, I get an error "Must be a valid public key. java.security.InvalidKeyException: invalid key format". I have copied the key directly out of the PuTTYGen key section. I have also tried generating a public key using openSSL on my Linux server with the command "ssh-keygen -t rsa".

Now I can't get past this error, which seems to be some kind of bug, given the fact that the string I entered is clearly not 106 characters.
