Is it possible to extend Remote SOAP / xml-rpc API?

I am looking to add remote SOAP methods via a custom add-on, as the existing implementation is not as complete as necessary for a project I am working on.

Is it possible to extend the API, or even wrap around the existing one to add remote functionality?

One example is that I'd need to have renderContent() workfor comments, but it seems to only handle pages.
