How do you block an issue or tasks?

We are setting up JIRA and I don't see any fields that easily show an issue or task is blocked.  I see you can link another issue that might be blocking an issue but what about when the issue or task is blocked by sources outside of Jira? We would like to easily see a task is blocked on the scrum board by it being marked red.  Thanks!

I am considering adding Risk and Issue as Issue types - so they can be assigned and tracked as tasks. What issues would this present?

You can customize the default workflow to include custom statuses. In your case, "Blocked".
