I'm trying to hide some fields upon issue creation that were created only for use during scripting or timestamping. I would like to hide the fields but not remove them from the screen scheme.

You can create a separate screen for the Create Issue operation. You can make a copy of the screen you have now, then just remove some of the fields you don't want the users to see when creating an issue. Then, configure the screen scheme to use the new screen.
