Custom Select list should not display any default option. It should force the user to select one from the dropdown

Harish September 2, 2012

Hi Team,

We have few custom fields of type - Select List created in jira 4.4.5

There are no default option set for the field, however the first option in the dropdown is displayed in the select list as default.

We do not want any option to be displayed as default, it should be blank or can display 'Select an option..' in the select list field.

This value blank or 'Select an option ..' shouldnot be defined as one of the options.

This should make the user to check the dropdown and select an appropriate option fro,m the dropdown.

Please let us know how can this be achieved.

Thanks,

Harish.

Hi, by default if you have a select list and no default values are set, it should display 'None' and this 'None' is definitely not an option. Do you want to customize this? You could inject some javascript in the description field in the field configuration to rename 'None' to something else.

If the select list is a required field, 'None' cannot be selected. You can give it a try.

Cheers,

Took me a while to figure this out but for Radio Lists you can do this, and not show "None". But for lists, None will have to be included. All you do is delete the None option from Custom Fields-> Configure Custom Fields-> Edit Options, then set your Default value to None. This means that if the user selects None in the form (list field, because if it's Radio, None won't show), an error will display and not allow the user to create the issue.
