Can users be tagged in confluence text field?

I am trying to create a database whose stored text values are able to have and/or create an @user  link in them.  I think I already know the answer, but thought I might try my luck.  See picture for example: I can type the @user, but it only returns a text value.  Same if I try and edit the stored data.  Thanks.
