The Bonfire browser extensions handle all their communication with the JIRA plugin via a custom REST API.

At the moment the API is not published anywhere as it is not stable, and changes almost every version as new features are added. This is the major reason for the current tight coupling between the browser extension version and the JIRA plugin version.

We are planning on stabilising the API and easing the version-matching restrictions in the near future - you can watch https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/BON-667 for updates.
