User story with subtasks - which card should I drag between columns in Rapid board?

Borek Bernard January 30, 2012

I have create a User story and added several subtasks to it. Now it displays hierarchically in the To Do column - user story being the top level with all the tasks being visually nested. However, both user story and tasks are draggable separately.

In Kanban, what should I drag to the In Progress column? If I drag the user story, tasks stay in the To Do column which doesn't seem quite right. What do you people do? Drag individual tasks and when they are done, drag the User story card directly to the Done column, skipping In Progress?

We typically start the story and then start subtasks as people are free to work on them. That way, we can easily tell the stories that have active development (they are in Progress) and can see what's still OnDeck/InProgress/etc as well.
