feature request: more intuitive icons for work type

Icons for work type are not logical or intuitive.

image.png

  • Feature is lightning. But lightning which is dangerous and unwanted. A star icon is often used in GUIs for new features.
  • duplicate icons for Epic and new Feature. and duplicate icons for Task and subtask
  • Story has the logo of a bug (and bug doesn't). Why not a book icon?
  • Task icon is a JSX closing fragment. I don't get the reference. Unless it's always a coding task.

Exclamation mark for bug is fine. And lightbulb for improvement is also fine as a lightbulb is associated with ideas.

I tried to change the work type field. But it's not found as a named element, only as an icon. Apparently you have to click on the icon itself, but it doesn't work everywhere. Only if you open the work item.

Jira often changes UX. It would be nice if it was more intuitive, standardized and consistent.

Hi @Chris Idema Welcome to the Atlassian Community Forums!

I feel you. 'Old' and 'New' design icons/avatars are mixed now and color coding is not logical for related work types.

Atlassian Design should simply offer dozens of examples (like https://icons.quirk.com.au/) does.

Hi @Chris Idema

I can understand your concern. Some of the newer Jira work type icons are not very intuitive, and a few of them do look visually similar, which can make issue types harder to distinguish quickly.

Jira Cloud currently has limited customization for default system icons, so changes are somewhat restricted. This would be a good feature suggestion for Atlassian around better UX consistency and more customizable work type icons.
